Above are the tentative dates for the 2011 PSM Stamp Fair. Over the years, I can see that the number of dealers are definitely growing and its really good news for local philatelist. I truly hope we can have a World Class Stamp Fair very soon.

My First Maxicards for 2011

Maximaphily has definitely been the latest craze of philately. To be frank, I was rather skeptical at first but after much persuasion from friends, I finally decided to give it a try. You know what; its really very interesting and challenging. Getting the right postcard to match the stamp is definitely no easy matter.

Below are my first maxicards for 2011:

I have to agree its not the best but I thought the the rabbit's colour and patches are rather similar. However, the image of human in the card would be more appropriate.

I prefer this maxicard even though I had to sacrifice the ms to make this maxicard. Sadly, a mistake if you notice. OMG, I'm definitely still very amateur. I should have use the stamp to close the word ''HARE". That would definitely been better.

Anyway, I'm really hoping to make more maxicards in the near future and hopefully maxicards of much better quality. Definitely will need help from the experts hence all advice is truly appreciated.

Its been quite a while since I last blog and Im very sorry for disappointing my readers. It has been a tiring month for me as I was caught up with a lot of work. Finally manage to have some time for philately as its the Chinese New Year holidays. Not too sure what I should blog about but I guess I should take this opportunity to introduce the latest ISC Catalogue (28th Edition).

Yes, I'm sure most of us prefer SG, Scot or Michel but this is a really good and lets not forget very affordable catalogue for Malaysian collectors. I wouldn't rate it as the best catalogue but I'm sure its good enough for at least beginners.

Highland Tourist Spot (21-02-2011)

Pos Malaysia Berhad will be issuing a special collection of stamps and first-day covers with regards to Highland Tourist Spot on 21st February 2011. The stamps include 4 designs with 50 sen, 60 sen, 90 sen, and RM1 denomination. Apart from that, a a set of 4 official maxicards will be also issued.

Four Highland Tourist Spot has been chosen and they are,

Kundasang, Sabah
Gunung Mat Cincang, Langkawi, Kedah
Cameron Highlands, Pahang
Bukit Bendera, Pulau Pinang

If you asked me, I definitely love this set of stamps though they have nothing to do with Birds of Preys. LOL. Wonderful designs and I'm looking forward to make some private maxicards.

Definitely a sad sad scenario in Malaysia. Isn't there any more appreciation for postal services? I truly hope this will never happen again. Though i have to agree that our postal services still needs improvement but this is NO WAY how we treat them.

Anyway, the person who took this picture was actually awarded RM50; what irony?

Sorry for I rarely have time to prepare any write-ups or posts as I'm currently very very busy with my work. Project is reaching its end phase and alot of ad hoc work is going on. LOL

Anyway, to keep the post going, I would like to share a simple yet beautiful cover from China. This is actually a pre paid cover hence a genuine postal stationery. I simply love the current philatelic scene in China where they have access to so many postal stationeries from prepaid covers to prepaid postcards. Not to mentioned, all the themes in the world; truly a haven for thematic philatelists. KUDOS to China for providing an avenue for all type/level of collectors and philatelist. I truly appreciate the effort.

Hopefully, Malaysia could be like that one day. Lets revive the greatest hobby ever, STAMPS!!!

Pos Malaysia Berhad will be issuing a special collection of stamps and first-day covers with regards to Children's Pet on 18th January 2011. The stamps include 3 designs with 60 sen, 80 sen, and RM1 denomination. Apart from that, a ms with RM5 denomination will be also issued.

Please take note that this will be the first issue for 2011 and its great that there are rabbit for both the stamp and ms as 2011 is the year of the rabbit. I'm very sure the Chinese community truly appreciates POS Malaysia's efforts. Though appreciate that the stamp designers used a retro theme for this issue but it felt abit weird as the children in the stamps truly does not resemble Malaysians. LOL

I would like to start my 2011 post by sharing a beautiful raptor cover from Romania. Simply love this cover especially the beautiful ms with clear CDS postmark.

2010 has been a very good philatelic year for me; not because I got some rare materials but rather because I met so many good friends along the way. Glad to have known all of you and hopefully we will have many more friendly exchanges.

Stamp Exhibition (15 Dec 2010 - 15 Mar 2011)

A stamp exhibition is held from the 15th Dec 2010 to 15th March 2011 at the National Museum of Malaysia. Frankly, I have no clue what is being exhibited as I didn't know about it until recently. It was rather a surprise but I'm happy that the Government has taken the effort to ensure philately will be an evergreen hobby in Malaysia. I'm sure with a joint effort form all sectors, Philately will make a great comeback in Malaysia.

Registered Cover From Myanmar

A lovely registered FDC from Myanmar. I love the cover very much as its a genuine FDC posted from Myanmar. I guess all philatelist will love covers from Myanmar. In addition, the ms is cancelled correctly. What do I mean?

Not all will agree with me but if you ask my opinion, I believe a ms has to be cancelled both on the stamp (refer to the CDS) and on the cover itself (refer to the blue cancel). This is because you can always used a CTO on the cover and if you ask me that is not genuine. Franking a cover with CTO is practiced in many countries even in Malaysia. Though many collectors/philatelist take lightly of this scenario, I tend to appreciate if friends could put 2 cancels on a ms.

I would like to know what others think about this? Please comment.

Christmas is here once again and what more to share if not a cover reflecting the spirit of Christmas. However, over the years I realized Christmas has become more of a commercial festive season rather than a day to remember that Christ came to the world and died for our sins. I would like to stress that Christmas is definitely not about Santa but its solely about Christ our Lord.

PSM Year End Stamp Fair (18-19 Dec 2010) - Recap

Me and Pamela drop by MBPJ Library yesterday for the PSM Year End Stamp Fair. We were shocked as there was a good crow. This was a surprise as POS Malaysia was having the Stamp Week at Berjaya Times Square too. We expected people to be there. Anyway, it was a great event with a few new dealers, drawing competition for children, lucky draw and also a display of award winning exhibition.

Love the exhibits as there was just so much we could learn about. Most of all, we love the opportunity to meet all the senior philatelist and every conversation was a good learning experience.

This is my first cover from Chile. Love the postmarks and beautiful stamps. Most of all, I appreciate registered covers. Not too sure about the labels though. hope someone can help me with the labels. My wild guess would be air labels but 3 types seems dubious. A lovely yet simple cover from Australia. What I love most about the cover its the slogan postmark that states "Summer Fun in Bright". This clearly shows how philately can be used for tourism. Love the concept and do take note that this isn't something new. Using covers, slogan postmarks, etc. has been long exploited to share a message to people world wide.

I truly believe philately can bring a difference to the world.

Pictorial Postmark From China

This is yet another beautiful and complex pictorial postmark from China. I'm simply amazed with the details that went into the design. Kudos to POST China. This type of postmarks are definitely a gem among thematic collectors and fingers cross; hopefully China will come up with a beautiful Eagle postmark one day. Can't wait for it. LOL...

Another interesting thing about this cover is that it was send via surface mail. That's definitely something new for me especially when we talk about overseas mail. As always, looking forward to more friendly exchanges with all my friends.

Info about Upin & Ipin:

Upin & Ipin is a Malaysian television series of animated shorts produced by Les' Copaque Production, which features the life and adventures of the eponymous twin brothers in a fictional Malaysian kampung. Originally a side project for the blockbuster animated film Geng: The Adventure Begins, Upin & Ipin was introduced on TV9 in 2007 as a six-episode Ramadan/Eid special, to instil significance of the Islamic holy month amongst children. To date, the series has reached its fourth season, including another Ramadan special season in 2008, and, season three onwards, the year-long, secularly themed Upin & Ipin and Friends, the series' international debut via the Disney Channel Asia, which is not explaining Ramadan, but telling the lives of Upin and Ipin with their friends on the normal days.

Love this cover from China. It depicts 20th Anniversary of Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China-Singapore. I simple love the pictorial postmarks. Like usual, China Pos has never failed to impress us with their creative pictorial postmarks. Another very interesting thing is that this is a real posted First Day Cover (checkout the CDS and pictorial postmarks; both have the same date).

Definitely a great cover from China though there are no birds. LOL...

Greetings From Singapore

Yes. I was in Singapore for a Business trip. Thanks to Terence, I got to know that some of the Post Offices in Singapore actually opens till 9pm. OMG, thats truly what Malaysia needs especially for people like me. I normally have to stay back in office till very late; moreover taking work back home seems inevitable all the time. It will be great if POS Malaysia could adopt this from our neighbours; I'm sure both locals and foreigners will appreciate it alot.

Sadly, I didnt have the chance to do any stamp shopping. I had alot of plans but again I have to remind myself that it was a business trip. This time around Business comes first. LOL. Anyway, Ive to thank my beloved wife as she took the initiative to visit the Novena Post Office which is near the hotel we were staying. Yes, she send out about 10 covers to friends she knew. So, for those who got the cover from Singapore, I truly hope all of you will like them alot as this is my wife's first try to send covers. Fingers cross, I hope she got all of u beautiful covers.

This is a very beautiful Bird Cover from Canada depicting the Peregrine Falcon. Yes, Peregrine Falcons are also Birds of Prey which is my primary theme. That is why I love this cover so much.

I love the clear cancellation and the neat address. Though I have to admit, I personally prefer hand written address. LOL...

A little info about Peregrine Falcon:

The Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), also known as the Peregrine, and historically as the "Duck Hawk" in North America, is a cosmopolitan bird of prey in the family Falconidae. The Peregrine is renowned for its speed, reaching speeds of over 320 km/h (200 mph) during its characteristic hunting stoop, making it the fastest extant member of the known animal kingdom.

It is a large, crow-sized falcon, with a blue-gray back, barred white underparts, and a black head and "moustache". Experts recognize 17 to 19 subspecies which vary in appearance and range; there is disagreement over whether the distinctive Barbary Falcon is a subspecies or a distinct species. Typical of bird-eating raptors, all subspecies of F. peregrinus, including the nominate, are sexually dimorphic, with females being considerably larger than males.

Cover From Latvia

This is a beautiful cover from Latvia. However, being a cover collector, I would have prefer that the first day postmark to be cancelled on the stamp rather than the cover. Another thing I don't fancy is the difference in date for both the postmark; meaning this cover was cancelled on the first day of issue but send on a much later day. Like all cover collectors, I would have preferred a real posted cover. A real posted cover is a First Day Cover that is send on the first day of issue bearing both the official cancellation and CDS cancellation. Ooops, sorry... I guess I should not demand to much. No matter how a cover is send, it still represents the modern day postal history.

Anyway, I still love this cover a lot as I understand how much effort was put into making this cover. Thank you my friend and I'm looking forward to more friendly exchanges with friends from Latvia.

This is definitely one of the BEST PHILATELIC COVER I've ever received. Everything a philatelic cover needs; complete set, clear CDS postmark, and clear address is on the cover. Simply a marvelous bird cover. Basically the ms consists of 6 stamps with 1.20 yuan denomination. The birds depicted in the stamps are as follow:

This time around I would like to showcase a beautiful registered postal cover from Indonesia. Simply lovely with 2 bird stamps; Hornbill and Rock Pigeon. Again, I would like to highlight the importance of using the right sized cover. This is a C6 size cover and it is perfect for cover exchange. Bigger covers tend to get damaged much easier especially on the edges. Also please remember to include a cardboard inside.

Special Date Postmark - The New Crave

Postmarks Collection is nothing new in philately especially for traditional philatelist. Basically postmarks consists of 4 major division:

1. Circular Dated Stamp (CDS)

2. First Day Postmark

3. Pictorial Postmark

4. Meter Postmark

I guess I need not elaborate on the above as most of us are well aware of the different type of postmarks and I'm sure there are many articles in the web which has elaborated explaination with regards to different types of postmarks. However, today I would like to share something that has been a crave for the new philaletist generation. Yes, it is Special Date Postmarks. What do I mean by Special Date Postmarks?

Special date postmarks are basically postmarks that reflects special dates such as 10-10-10 or 20-10-2010. Many have argued that this sort of collection is of no value but I disagree. Any collection is valuable if they are cherished by its owner. If a philatelist is commited to do extensive research and build a collection, I'm sure it will be something great in the future. 1Malaysia Collection (10-11-10)

MNH set

Pos Malaysia Berhad issued a special collection of stamps and first-day covers with regards to One Malaysia Collection on 10th November 2010. The stamps include 2 design with 30 sen denomination and 2 more with 50 sen denomination. Oops, I know what are u thinking. What happen to the new tariff. Since the new tariff was introduced, only stamps with 60 sen, 70 sen, 80 sen and RM1 was introduced. Why all of sudden the 30 sen and 50 sen are appearing again?

Is it because of the pressure philatelist is putting on POS Malaysia? I hope it was the case but come on; lets face it. The truth is rather obvious. POS Malaysia has printed these issue way before the tariff was introduced. OMG, another one of those famous blunders by our dear postal authorities.

Putting that aside, this is certainly a special issue as it was design by students from Lim Kok Wing University; one of the best schools of art. If you look closely, you could see the logo of Lim Kok Wing next to POS Malaysia. Hats off to the designers as I believe they have put alot of effort too it.

Beside the stamps and FDCs, a special postal card is up for sale. RM4 for a set of 4 is definitely a good bargain. A good chance to create your own maxicards. :)

First of all, I'm really very sorry for the long overdue. I have been very busy with work recently and just couldn't find any time to blog. Again, my humble apologies to all my readers.

However, the good news is that I have my camera back and finally could post the beautiful covers Ive received all this while. For a start, I would like to showcase a lovely bird cover form Thailand which depicts ornaments of birds. Simply a wonderful bird set and to get them on a cover is truly wonderful. Pahang Heritage - Mourning Stamps?

Looking closer to the Pahang Heritage issue, we tend to wonder if its a coincidence or another one of those famous blunder by POS Malaysia. If you are wondering what I'm talking about, please take a good look at the stamps.

I have to agree they surprisingly look good but a black border is definitely very disturbing. Black border stamps are often associated with "national bereavement" or more commonly called "mourning" stamps. OMG, this is definitely a big blunder if you ask me.

Although this is not a cast in stone rule, I truly believe POS Malaysia and the designer should have avoided this kinda controversies. It will definitely add to the bad rapport POS Malaysia is currently building. Agreed that Pahang's flag is black and white but I'm sure there are millions of ways to reflect them on a stamp; not neccessarily with a black border.

I believe the Sultan himself or the state authorities must have seen the proofs and approved it before it was forwarded to POS for printing. So many parties was involved yet no one noticed? Its rather unbelievable.

Samples of mourning stamps with Black borders:

The Greek 250-drachma-on-3d stamp (Scott 499) shown in the stamp above was issued as a memorial for King George II, who died on April 1, 1947. The stamp was surcharged with a new value and overprinted with black borders. Overprinting existing stamp stocks allowed a quick release of the mourning stamp, just 14 days later on April 15.

Those in mourning used letter paper and envelopes that were edged in black. Some sources say that the width of the borders varied from narrow to broad based upon the closeness of the relationship of the writer to the deceased, the amount of time that has passed, or the importance of the deceased. The cover above illustrates a mourning cover mailed from Chelsea, England, to Yonkers, N.Y., in 1937.

The use of black borders was not restricted to postage stamps. In 1935, Belgium used black borders on semipostal stamps depicting the lovely Queen Astrid. Astrid was a Swedish princess who married Belgium's Crown Prince Leopold in 1926. In 1934, he ascended the throne and Astrid became the queen consort. On Aug. 29, 1935, 29-year-old Queen Astrid died in an automobile accident in the Swiss Alps. Just two months later, on Oct. 31, Belgium issued the 70-centime+5c Queen Astrid semipostal stamp (Scott B174) shown in stamp above. It was the first of a set of eight black-bordered Queen Astrid semipostal stamps.

Elections at the 71st FIP Congress

At the 71st FIP Congress the delegates of 88 countries elected a new president, Mr Tay Peng Hian from Singapore, as well as the Vice-President for Asia, Mr Surajit Gongvatana from Thailand and a new Director, Mr Bernie Beston from Australia. The best part is Mr Tay is also a lifetime member of the Philatelic Society of Malaysia (PSM). That's truly an honor for us too. Congratulation to Mr Tay and I'm sure FIP Congress will bring philately to the next level under the leadership of great leaders of the philatelic world.

Kaspersky Booklet - Truth Unveiled

Though its finally proven to be a collaboration between Kaspersky and POS Malaysia but there is definitely an uneasy feeling among Malaysian philatelist. The most intriguing thing here is that most PSM members are not aware of this issue. How can this be when our President Mr VT Nathan was there to launch the booklet. Something's wrong somewhere....

This booklet is still very ambiguous and there are just so many controversial matters surrounding this particular issue. However, I definitely believe with the right price, its a good item to have in a Malaysian Collection but for me, sorry; just not my type. Come on, using the same stamps with a different booklet? That's rather lame if you ask me.

I would love to know if this sort of scenarios do happen in your country. Appreciate comments and feedbacks.

Kaspersky Booklet?

While going through PSM's blog, I found something very interesting and would love to share it with my friends. I guess the images speaks for themselves...

Kaspersky Booklet

Trust me, I'm as surprise as all of you. Since when did Kaspersky (a reknown anti virus software) issued stamps in Malaysia? The funny thing here is that the stamps are obviously genuine and was taken from the One Malaysia collection issued on 31st August 2009.

One Malaysia Booklet

Please take note that anybody can come out with a private booklet with genuine stamps but the point here is whether POS Malaysiangave its authorization for the use of its name/logo. IMHO, I just fail to see the need for POS Malaysia to do this as the original issue comes with an official booklet. Seriously, something is not right here.

Another illegal issue? Yes, I used the word another solely because this has happened before. Around 1998-2000s, there were similar "private" booklets with blocks of genuine stamps for the Commanweath Games with the official POS logo which was later found to be unauthorized, hence making the booklet illegal.

Looking at this, it marks another black day for Malaysia Philately. Just imagine what will happen in the near future. Obviously, as a collector/philatelist, this provides us with another area to study but if you ask me, I definitely say this is rather unethical. How do we classify this in philately; forgery, cinderella, etc? or more percisely the work of some "Smart Alex" who is trying to make a fast buck.

Anyway, we will definitely need to know what is going on and the least POS Malaysia could do is to let us know what is happening. If this is an official issue, please explaing why it was not sold to the public; if not, please take the appropriate actions for the future of philately in Malaysia. Looking at things, I believe this will just end up another mystery like many other mystery issues in Malaysia. LOL...

How Far Do I Go As a Thematic Collector?

Being a thematic collector, many have repeatly asked this particular question; How far do I go as a thematic collector?

Like all others, I went through the normal cycle; from world wide, to Birds, to specific birds and slowly to a more specialized area. I guess this is a normal cycle for all. When it comes to a thematic collector I guess we can have 2 major type of collector/philatelist:

1) one who is passionate about his/her thematic collection and gets everything that comes by; duplicates are never a problem

2) one who collects specific thematic material for his/her exhibit

IMHO, both collector/philatelist are as passionate and the only difference between them is their goal. One who love to have a complete and comprehensive collection of a specific theme while the second dreams of a GOLD medal. Hats off to both as a lot of passion and effort is put into their great work.

Then the another question pops up; which is more cost effective? As Ive mentioned numerous times, I really dont like to put a value on philatelic materials. For me they are small things in life that are priceless. However, if you insist on knowing the cost, IMHO both incur the same cost. As a exhibitor, he/she will first plan out his/her story board and moving forward, will only purchase relevant materials. Seems cheap enough but bear in mind, GOLD Medal means GOLD INVESTMENT!!! Specific materials like essays, errors, proofs, etc are priority whereas a thematic collector who collects everything tends to buy anything he/she could afford. Again seems cheaper, but when the bulk becomes bigger, you definitely will cross that very thin line again. Please take note that no matter how casual a collector/philatelist can be, there will be a time when the temptation of a more specialized collection becomes unbearable. HAHAHA, Im sure you will agree. I guess philately isn't cheap when you get really serious bout it.

As for the question; How far do I go as a thematic collector? I guess first you need to set a goal. As for the goal, please dont be influence by others. Give good thought to it and eventually you will know what u really want. If you asked me, there is a thin line between an exhibitor and a thematic collector, but an even thinner line between a thematic and a traditional philatelist. Ooops, dont shoot me please. I know its a taboo within the traditional community but IMHO, thematic philatelist/collectors tend to go abroad when they really committed.

After you know what are your goals, then its time to analyze whether your topic/theme is suitable. I have narrowed my collection from Birds to Birds of Prey and Pigeons as it is easier for me to focus on both. Moreover, its much cheaper when we talk about dollar and cents. I was rather comfortable with my decision as I can slowly build my collection and spend a little more on the more expensive issues. However, as time passes, the urge to be involved in exhibition becomes unbearable and this is when I realized being too specific on a theme for exhibit is never easy. Just imagine, how many postmarks where there for birds of prey or more importantly how many essays/proofs are there in the market? Unlike wider themes such as Birds or more abstract themes like Wind, Water, etc. materials are easier to hunt for but again not necessarily cheap. Please take note that with a specific theme, though the workload becomes bigger but the end results is most satisfying.

I guess in the end, its all about the decision we make. No one philatelist can dictate what is the limit. Please bear in mind there was never a limit in philately. Just use your imagination and dont never give up. No matter what the end result is, the most essential thing is that you had given your best. Im sure by then, all else doesnt really matter.

Sneak Preview of Pahang Heritage (24-10-10)

Pos Malaysia Berhad will be issuing a special collection of stamps and first-day covers with regards to Pahang Heritage on 24th October 2010 in conjunction with the 80th Birth Anniversary of HRH Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah. There will be a total of 3 design with 60 sen, 80sen and RM1 denomination. In addition, the cover will be sold at 30 sen each.

To be frank, I was a little surprise as i was expecting Cameron Highlands, the national park, etc would be depicted as the heritage of Pahang. I guess I have no say to this and have to bluntly accept it. LOL. Nevertheless, this will be an interesting issue for those who collect on the theme on Malaysian Royalty.

I doubt this will be a HOT issue but I guess its too early for me to say so. Let's see what happen and as usual I will prepare covers for all my cover collector buddies. If any of my readers wants mint set, please drop me a mail/comment.

HRH Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah ibni Sultan Abu Bakar Riayatuddin Al-Muadzam Shah (born 24 October 1930 at Istana Mangga Tunggal, Pekan) was the seventh Yang di-Pertuan Agong (roughly equivalent to King) of Malaysia from 29 March 1979 to 25 April 1984, and fifth Sultan of modern Pahang.

Born Tengku Ahmad Shah, he was the only son of Sultan Sir Abu Bakar Riayatuddin Al-Muadzam Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Abdullah Al-Mutassimu Billah Shah (reigned 1932-1974) by his official and royal consort, Tengku Ampuan Besar Fatimah binti Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Kadasallah Shah.

A student of the Malay College Kuala Kangsar, he received diplomas in public administration from Worcester College, Oxford and Exeter University. He succeeded his father as sultan in 1974.

Deepavali Personalized Stamps

Pos Malaysia will be issuing yet another personalized stamps with regards to celebration in Malaysia. This time around, its for Deepavali and Pos Malaysia will issue the full sheet on 14th October 2010 which is tomorrow. The full sheet cost RM19.00 which again I think its rather expensive when you consider the face value of the stamp which is only RM6.00

I guess this is an opportunity for collectors/philatelist to add this set to their personalized stamp collection. Moreover, an opportunity to have some private FDCs. That will be interesting. Though, its an interesting idea by Pos Malaysia, I do feel a sense of uneasiness when it comes to issues of this sort. How do we categorized them? They are personalized stamps which are officially issued by Pos Malaysia. I guess I better take this to my next post and I'm sure it will be a heated discussion as personalized stamps has always been a rather controversial thingy in philately.

Anyway, it will be great to have this stamps on a postal cover as this kinda cover can be scare in the future. Doubt many will buy these stamps to post their cards. LOL... To all my readers who are interested in this set, please drop me a message/comment as I will not be getting this set unless requested by friends.

Cover From The Philippines

This time around, I would like to share a beautiful cover from The Philippines. If you are wondering why I've hidden my address, no worries. Its just that my camera is having problems and I had to get this image from my friend. LOL...

I love the fact that its registered and has clear CDS postmark. Moreover, it is franked with a high value p50 Philippine Eagle Stamp. I truly appreciate your effort to help me grow my Birds of Prey collection. Just can't thank you enough my dear friend.

I guess when it comes to Philippine philately, the biggest attraction for me would be the Philippine Eagle. The Philippine Eagle, Pithecophaga jefferyi, also known as the Great Philippine Eagle or Monkey-eating Eagle, is among the tallest, rarest, largest, and most powerful birds in the world. A bird of prey belonging to the family Accipitridae, it is also known as "Haribon" or "Haring Ibon," which means "Bird King". Its local name is banog.

A little info one of my favorite Birds of Prey:

The species was discovered in 1896 by the English explorer and naturalist John Whitehead, who observed the bird and whose servant, Juan, collected the first specimen a few weeks later.The skin of the bird was sent to William Robert Ogilvie-Grant in London in 1896, who initially showed it off in a local restaurant and described the species a few weeks later.

Upon its discovery, the Philippine Eagle was first called the monkey-eating eagle because of reports from natives of Bonga, Samar where the species was first discovered that it preyed exclusively on monkeys; from these reports it gained its generic name, from the Greek pithecus ("ape or monkey") and phagus ("eater of"). The specific name commemorates Jeffery Whitehead, the father of John Whitehead. Later studies revealed, however, that the alleged monkey-eating eagle also ate other animals such as colugo, civets, large snakes, monitor lizards, and even large birds like hornbills. This, coupled with the fact that the same name applied to the African Crowned Eagle and the South American Harpy Eagle, resulted in a presidential proclamation to change its name to Philippine Eagle in 1978, and in 1995 was declared a national emblem. This species has no recognized subspecies.

The Philippine Eagle was named the national bird of the Philippines in 1995 by President Fidel V. Ramos under Proclamation No. 615.This eagle, because of its size and rarity, is also a highly desired bird for birdwatchers.

POS Malaysia is again in the news but sadly this time around its for the wrong reason. Its definitely a sad case and I'm really sad that POS Malaysia staff has done such a thing. IMHO, POS Malaysia should spend more time and effort to ensure top notch service rather than hiking up postage rates and issuing outrageously expensive stamps. e.g. POS Office issue that cost RM16.80 a set is definitely too expensive for students. I have to agree that the price is not too bad for the working class and serious philatelist but if philately is to gain popularity in Malaysia, POS Malaysia should seriously look into the matter.

Cover From TAAF

This time around I would like to share a very interesting cover from the Territory of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands (TAAF). Its definitely my first cover from Juan de Nova island. Check out the coordinates on the cover; certainly an added bonus. By the way Juan de Nova island is located in the district of Iles Eparses (Scattered Islands in the Indian Ocean). A group of volcanic islands in the southern Indian Ocean, southeast of Africa, approximately equidistant between Africa, Antarctica and Australia;
Adelie Land, the French claim on the Antarctica continent;
The Scattered islands in the Indian Ocean.

The territory is also often called the French Southern Lands (French: Terres australes françaises) or French Southern Territories, which excludes Adélie Land where French sovereignty is not recognized internationally. The lands are not connected to France Antarctique, a former French colony in Brazil.

How to Protect Your Stamps?

Over the years, My biggest concern is not about getting stamps but rather keeping them. Surprise? I guess not if you are living in a country with high humidity like Malaysia. It is definitely a BIG BIG challenge for me as its never easy to fight mother nature.

There are really two main reasons why collectors go to great lengths to keep their stamps in the best condition possible. The main reason is a fact we cannot deny; stamps are valued with regards to its condition. A toned stamp or a missing perf can drastically decrease the value of a stamp. Secondly, its never a good feeling to have an imperfect stamp in your collection. You can ask any philatelist or collector. we all feel the same. However, please take note that we cant always get the best possible condition when it comes to classics but mind you we will always try our best.

Keeping stamps in a tropical country isn't easy at all due to its high humidity. There are a few key points we need to adhere to ensure that our stamps remains in the highest of quality.

Stamp Tongs

1. Always use Stamp Tongs
As philatelist/collector, using Stamp Tongs has definitely become second nature but there are times when we need to use our hands. e.g. to separate a single stamp from a sheet. Human skin is coated with some oily residue and not even a good hand wash could reduce the oil. The biggest problem starts when the oil is transfered to our precious stamps; toning and spots start to appear. Definitely a nightmare.

Stamp mounts is truly a reliable yet proven way to keep stamps

2. Always use quality stock sheets/books/mounts
Renowned brands like lighthouse, hagner and prinz should be use to keep our stamps as they are non toxic and ensures the stamp stays fresh. Though expensive, they are worth the deal. As for me, stock sheets and books are rather hard to come by, hence I decided to use Prinz stamp mounts. I prefer the transparent mount over the black ones as it easier to check the gummed side of mnh stamps. Yes, I have to agree that black mounts look better.

Air tight boxes in various sizes

3. In humid countries, it is advisable to store stamps in air tight box
Yup, air tight box are essential. we can always use air tight tupperware with silica gel. Always ensure you use colour silica gel; pink means it needs to be change.

Glassine Envelopes

4. Glassine Envelopes - Another favorite
Glassine envelopes are definitely a favorite among philatelist/collectors but they have proven not to be too reliable over a very long period of time. So, be careful...

OPP Plastic

5. OPP plastic is a cheaper alternative
Another cheaper but proven alternative is to use OPP plastic. However, please make sure you get your OPP supply from the right place as other type of plastic can do much harm to your collection.

Dry Boxes for Cameras

6. Be creative with Dry Box
Another very reliable alternative would be to keep your stamps in a dry box. Dry box are rather expensive but its really reliable. Dry boxes are usually used for storing cameras but its a great for keeping stamps also. Fingers cross, hope to get at least one of those. LOL

7. Avoid exposing your stamps to sunlight and dust
Stamps and albums should always be kept out of direct sunlight and away from dust. Storing stamps in a cabinet with a door is one way to accomplish both of these goals. Special album slipcases are available from some album manufacturers to further protect the stamps inside. Sunlight often fade the colors of stamps and normally causes another heated argument on whether the stamp is genuinely has a faded color or its just mother nature's working. Guess I better bring this to yet another discussion. Should be an interesting one.

8. Controlled Room - The Ultimatum
This I would say is the ultimatum. A controlled room is a room dedicated to keep your stamps with 24/7 air conditioned environment. There is usually no windows and sophiscated machine that drys the humid air.

This are just a few ways to ensure our stamps stays in the best possible shape. I'm sure everyone will have their own unique way to protect their precious little jewels. I really hope to hear from all of you as this is certainly one of the most discussed topic in philately.

A Wonderful Surprise

Sierra Leone definitely brings much negative feedbacks when it comes to philately especially when they flooded the philatelic scene with topical wallpaper since mid 1980s. However, we cannot deny the fact that this tiny West African nation issued the world's first self-adhesive stamps in 1964 and again they were one of the early birds to adapt shape cut postage stamps.

I'm not a great fan of Sierra Leone die cut stamps but the 1967 die cut Eagle stamp has definitely caught my attention. Being a thematic collector of Birds of Prey specifically Eagles, to get one of this die cut stamp on cover would be great. I was trying to look for one in eBay and Delcampe but never had any luck. It just might be solely because Sierra Leone philatelic materials are just not a favorite among philatelist.

Then, one fine day, Martin mailed me that he would like to sen me a cover that was in his father's collection. I'm sorry for him as his dad passed away recently and decided to pass me the above cover. I have to agree it is not the rarest of cover or a pricey one but I'm really glad that someone actually remembered me. For me, thats a definitely a BIG WIN for philately. As Ive mentioned numerous times, philately was and is never about getting the most expensive materials but rather its about bringing people together. Thanks to philately, I found a new friend in Martin. Thank God for that.

I love the cover alot as it is a genuine postal cover sent from Sierra Leone to the Barclays Bank in Yorkshire, England in 1968. I personally love the clear postmark and if you notice even the air label is clearly stamped. I'm not too sure if the postage rate is correct but I'm quite sure its very close. Some feedbacks on the correct postage will be great.

Though for many philatelist, this is only a very normal cover but for me, its something I will cherish for life as it reminds me on how philately can bring people a far together. In addition, this cover definitely sits perfectly in my Eagle Collection.

Maxicards - Orang Asli Lifestyle

Hereby, I would like to showcase some of the maxicards for Orang Asli Lifestyle issue. I'm definitely very new to maximaphily but this new area in philately has surely caught my attention. Though it seems easy, trust me its really hard to create a good maxicard where the postcard, stamp and cancellation is directly related.

However, the journey to find the perfect postcard and patiently wait till the day you can use card is definitely a worthwhile journey. The satisfaction you get from the privately made maxicard is just mind blowing. I'm really happy to be part of the fun and I have to thank Mr Ye for the encouragement and advice along the way. Just can't thank you enough and I truly hope I will be as good as you one day.

Maximaphily

Maximaphily is a branch of philately involving the study and creation of maximum cards. It is one of eleven classifications of philately recognised by the Fédération Internationale de Philatélie (FIP) and therefore has its own FIP Commission.The FIP Maximaphily Commission holds an annual conference on the subject, most recently at Bucharest in 2008.

A maximum card is made up of three elements, the postcard, the stamp and the postmark. The object of maximaphily is to obtain a card where the stamp and picture are in close concordance, ideally with an appropriate cancellation too. The image should not be of the stamp on the card.

Maximaphily displays have become popular at competitive philatelic exhibitions and special rules have been developed by the FIP to assist in judging the entries.

Maximaphily did not become organised until after the Second World War. Before then maximum cards were created as novelties, often by tourists. Maximaphily is closely associated with thematic or topical stamp collecting and many thematic collections are enhanced with appropriate maximum cards.

Sneak Preview of Old Post Offices (09-10-10)

Pos Malaysia Berhad will be issuing a special collection of stamps and first-day covers with regards to POS Offices in Malaysia on 9th October 2010.There will be a total of 28 design with 60 sen denomination in a full sheet. In addition, the cover will be sold at 30 sen each.

This is definitely a very interesting issue as it depicts the old and new post offices from all the 14 states. In addition, it is significant because the launching day coincides with the World Post Day on 9th October. Please take note of the UPU emblem in the space between the two blocks, next to the three generations of POS logos. So the topic is very appropriate indeed.

It will definitely be a very interesting FDC as you can always try to get 14 different state postmark. However, a bigger cover is needed if you are to frank all the stamps on a single cover. Some creative thinking to do. LOL

However, personally i feel the price is definitely a BOMB for many collectors, even for me. I would prefer it to be issued in smaller quantities and could potentially be a very interesting collectible series.

How to make a Good Philatelic Cover?

Dear friends, i guess the new trend in philately today is philatelic covers. Yes, I have to agree that philatelic covers do not stand as a strong case for traditional philatelist as many aspect of a philatelic covers are rather questionable. For instance, a philatelic cover will usually be franked with a complete set rather than with the correct postage. As for me, though i prefer postal covers that carries thematic value, I can't ignore the beauty of philatelic covers. Over the years, Ive made many friendly exchanges but realized that not many pays attention to the finer aspect of cover collection.

In this post, I would like to highlight some areas that we need to look into if we are to send and receive good philatelic covers. Among them are:

Where to frank the stamps?

According to the UPU regulations, postage stamps have to be on the front top right hand side of each letter. If you use more then one stamp, at least one has to be at the top right hand side.

All others may somewhere else but on the front side. However, there are many countries today who allows extra postage stamps to be franked at the back of the cover.

Do you know how to address the cover?

The UPU does allow to place the address of destination either on the lower right or left hand side. Please use hand writing whenever possible else you can use computers and type writers. Labels has taken up great interest from collectors over the years but please ensure that the labels are of the highest quality. Low quality labels will damage the covers over time and most of the time the address will just blur off.

What is the right size envelope?

If you asked me, it depends on what are you sending. However. the prefer size among cover collectors are C6 covers.

What is the best postmark?

Obviously, the preferred postmark is clear hand cancelled CDS. However, collectors will also appreciate meter cancels, pictorial cancels and machine cancels which are clear and relates to the stamps else a clear hand cancelled CDS is just great. In addition, before sending a cover, it is good to know what type of cancel your exchange partner prefers e.g. SON cancel, light cancel etc.

How to ensure the cover does not bend?

It is essential to include a stiffener into the cover. Make sure the stiffener fits the cover well to ensure the edges of the cover is not damaged along the way. You can always recycle boxes and cardboards into stiffener. no problem there.

Other details:

Never use any sort of tape to seal the cover. This practice will damage the cover over the years as the cover will tone due to the sticky tape.
Use one theme but this is essential only to thematic collectors. When I say one theme, I don't mean a bird cover but a cover with the same type of bird. This can be a very good exhibit material for a thematic philatelist

FIRST DAY COVERS

Mint FDC

Many have repeatedly ask me on First Day Covers over the years. Some believed that FDCs are a great investment. SOrry guys/gals, FDC is definitely not a great investment unless you are talking about rare FDCs like the letter carrying Penny Black sent on the date of issue or any classic materials before the concept of FDC was introduced to the world. However, modern FDCs can be scare but i guess it all boils down to your expectation of the ROI. If you think or dream that modern FDCs can fetch a fortune from the Spinks; I'm sorry to say that you will rather be disapointed.

So, if FDC is not really a great investment, why then people collect them? I think its obvious as FDC has everything; stamp, pictorial cancelation, cover and not forgetting the information brochure itself. However, when it comes to advanced philatelist mattering not traditional or thematic, FDCs tend be a distance away. This is because their postal purpose is questionable. Technically, they are considered CTO. Ooops, I know! I know! Some of you will argue that FDCs are not CTO but rather a 'Favour cancel. I guess this is another area where we can really debate on especially when it comest to CTO (definitely on of the grey areas of philately).

Even worst when FDCs are not allowed in philatelic exhibitiom. This was definitely one of the root cause on why FDC's popularity has drastically went down over the years. However, FDCs can still play an importan part in a exhibition but only if you window the cancellation. As a thematic philatelist, I have to stress that though we can use FDC by windowing the cancellation, a postally used cover with pictorial cancellation is still prefered.

Over the years, FDC collectors has truly revolutionized these particular area of philately. FDC collectors today insist on "REAL POSTED FDC". Real posted FDCs are FDC posted on the same day as date of issue. Please take note that the FDC must include both the pictorial cancellation and CDS cancel. In addition, some very creative collectors have taken more effort by creating their own unique cachet.

I guess IMHO, FDC's should be accepted for what they are; a collector's item commemorating an event. We have to acknowledge that FDC is the best and most effective way to promote philately among the young. The sad part is when dealers try to manipulate collectors that FDC will gain value over time hence more than not, a great disapointment to many young collectors.

Back to the question everyone tend to ask, should we still collect FDC? My answer is simple, collect them if they make you happy. That's the essence of philately. Please remember, philately is always about having fun and treasuring the little things in life and definitely not about investment only.

Considered to be the most distinguished stamp collector in America. She was the first woman to be appointed as judge for an international philatelic exhibition. As philatelist, I guess the name mentioned above are rather a norm for us. We will always hear their names in the philatelic scenes. However, below is a list of people that will certainly shock some of us. They did shock me when I came about this info some time ago.

John Lennon

From the rock band The Beatles collected 550 specimens of used stamps during his youth. Lennon’s stamp album was bought by the Smithsonian Postal Museum for a sum of $ 53, 000.00 in 2005.

Freddie Mercury

The lead vocals of the band Queen started stamp collecting since he was 12 years old. When Mercury died of AIDS complication in 1991, his father sold his philatelic collection. In the winter of 1993, the Freddie Mercury stamp collection was purchased by the Royal Mail and the proceeds of the sale went to an AIDS charity.

Ronnie Wood

The lead guitarist of The Rolling Stones became a renowned stamp collector after his alcohol rehabilitation therapy. Wood collects rare stamps and often makes them his subjects in painting.

Maria Sharapova

Though she is more a tennis sensation than a well-known stamp collector, Sharapova has been collecting stamps since she was a little girl.

I was thinking abit on whether I should blog about this. I realized the people here are very very RICH; then comes the question, is philately only for the rich? I used to have that mentallity during my early years of trying to move towards a more specialized collector. It always seems so hard to compete during auctions. You always know what you need, where to source, yet budget tends to get in the way. LOL...

However, over the years, I came to understand that philately is not about having the rarest stamp or cover (though it will be still VERY VERY GOOD to own them). Its about the passion you have for philately. With time, all will come to play. A piece of very important advice I got from fellow philatelist is never to rush. A collection will be completed over time and how long must never be a question. Whats essential is you enjoy the journey.

Lets not envy the famous collectors but rather be honoured that the hobby I and you share is also the hobby of very very famous people. As the saying goes "STAMP COLLECTING IS The KING OF HOBBIES & HOBBY OF KINGS". So, next time when someone laughs at you when they came to know about your philately passion, just show them the list of people who are philatelist. I'm not sure about the rest but Maria Sharapova's name will definitely pop some eyes. LOL

Dear friends. I'm very sorry for the delay in my updates. I was in my hometown for a short break. Just needed some time to relax after a rather tiring yet exciting months with work. It was truly a timely yet needed break for both me and my wife. We had a great time in Taiping; its good to be out of the "concrete jungle" and be in a real one...

Anyway, this time around I will like to share 2 very beautiful covers from Argentina. Yes, it is a Football Cover commemorating the World Cup in South Africa. Though being a a big fan of Brazil, I still have the upmost respect for Argentina led by Diego Maradona as the coach. What a combination; a country which actually live and breath football was led by an icon who took the world by storm, Diego Maradona. In addition, with Lionel Messi in the team, who dares to under estimate them. It was definitely looking to be one of the most memorable world cup ever.

Sadly, my world cup ended early when Brazil lost in the semi final though I still believe Brazil played one of the best football during the world cup. Even worst, Argentina also lost to Germany. That is really sad as I was hoping for a Brazil - Argentina final. It would have been a dream come true for me (especialy when Brazil wins... LOL) Guess i need to wait for 2014 in Brazil. Wow, Brazil winning their 6 title in their own turf... OMG, Ive started to dream.

Anyway, back to the covers. Simply lovely covers as they depict only one theme. This is an important criteria for a philatelic cover but definitely not a neccesity for a postal cover. I look forward to have more friendly exchanges with friends from Argentina. If possible, please send me a bird cover next time... HAHAHA.. I know i can be greedy.

Today is the 47th anniversary of the formation of Malaysia. Malaysia Day is held on every September 16 to commemorate the establishment of Malaysian federation on the same date in 1963. It marked the joining together of Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak and North Borneo to form Malaysia. The formation of the new federation was planned to occur on June 1, 1963, but was later postponed to August 31, 1963, in order to coincide with the sixth Hari Merdeka (Independence Day). Several issues related to the Indonesian and the Filipino objection to the formation of Malaysia delayed the declaration to September 16 of the same year. The postponement was also done to allow the United Nations team time to conduct referendums in North Borneo (now known as Sabah) and Sarawak regarding the two states participation in a new federation.

Is Philately A Dying Hobby Among Youth?

Its been 170 years since the world's first adhesive postage stamp, Penny Black was used in a public postal system. Philately has since seen numerous revolution over the years and more recently the addition of Maxiphily is evidence of the ever evolving hobby. Putting that aside, I would like to bring up a very disturbing reality; Philately among Youth.

Over the years, I always wondered if philately is dying among the youth? I have to admit the temptation of PS3, XBox 360, facebook,etc tends to be unbearable. Even my brother thinks Im crazy. He feels that I could spend my money on better gadgets than mere paper. LOL

Looking back for the past few years in Malaysia, it really seems that the young philatelist is moving towards extinction. Wait... can i consider myself young; being only 26? HAHAHA... I guess you cant ignore the fact that you see the same faces at all stamp fairs, post offices during new issues and more importantly during the crazy and tiring hunt for stamps at the dealers. OMG, Malaysian Philately world suddenly seems so small; I mean really SMALL.

However, I realized now that the youths are very tech-savvy. They rarely come to stamp fairs but they are very very active in online forums and ebay. I've met many along the way and trust me; some are very advanced philatelist. They believe the best way to learn is from the web itself. I have to agree as I've learn so much from forums, and stamp blogs from all over the world. My knowledge on stamps will not be only bounded towards my country but rather a wider study scope. I would have never imagine/dream of having interest on Third Reich Philately if not for the world wide web. However, trust me, no matter how much online philately can help, I still love to have frequent meet-ups, having a drink and chatting about philately, exchanging knowledge, and a little bit of showing off on your latest findings. LOL...

Over the years, I'm lucky to have very close friends like Holger, Vera and Xu Wei coming all the way to Malaysia to meet me. The experience was great and the memory is something I will cherish for life. In addition, PSM have weekly meet ups to keep up with the latest updates.

While browsing some philatelic blogs and forums, I realized that a few schools in Malaysia have been very actively involved in promoting Philately. where else to start if not schools itself? Hats off to Chung Ling High School and Sam Tet for your efforts.

So, I guess no matter what happen, philately was here and is here to STAY;whether its via online or the traditional way. You can argue that there are tones of temptation out there but nothing beats philately. Waiting anxiously for covers in your mail box. thats just out of this world.

So for the question; Is Philately A Dying Hobby among Youth? Definitely NOT... PHILATELY HAS EVOLVED WITH TECHNOLOGY!!! I'm really happy that philately is finally getting to where it should always be, "THE KING OF HOBBIES & THE HOBBY OF KINGS"

Pos Malaysia Berhad will be issuing a special collection of stamps and first-day covers with regards to Orang Asli Lifestyle on 27th September 2010.

Orang Asli are actually the aborigines of Malaysia. Its great that POS Malaysia is finally issuing stamps to commemorate their life style. Sadly, its been long overdue as I believe the aborigines in Malaysia can and should be included in many of the recent stamp designs; namely traditional costume 2009, traditional food 2010. Anyway, kudos to the great effort by POS Malaysia.

There will be 3 design each for the 60 sen denomination, 70 sen denomination and 80 sen denomination. In addition, the cover will be sold at 30 sen each. I love this issue as it yet again gives us the opportunity to create beautiful maxicards.

A little info on Orang Asli in Malaysia:

Orang Asli (lit, "original peoples" or "aboriginal peoples" in Malay) is a general Malaysian term used for any indigenous groups that are found in Peninsular Malaysia. They are divided into three main tribal groups – Semang (Negrito), Senoi, and Proto-Malay (Aboriginal Malay). The Orang Asli are further divided into 18 sub-ethnic group according to their different languages and customs. The Negritos are usually found in the northern region of the peninsula, the Senois in the central region, and the Proto-Malay in the southern region. There is an Orang Asli museum at Gombak, which is about 25 km north of Kuala Lumpur.

According to the Encyclopedia of Malaysia, the Negritos, who number approximately 2,000, are regarded as the earliest inhabitants of the Malay Peninsula. They are of Australo-Melanesian affinity and probably descend from the people of Hoabinhian cultural period, with many of their burials found dating back 10,000 years ago. They speak the Aslian languages which is part of the Austro-Asiatic language family, as do their Senoi agriculturalist neighbours. Negritos belong to various subgroups, namely the Kensiu, Kintak, Lanoh, Jahai, Mendriq and Bateq. Those from Perak, Kedah and Pahang are also known as Sakai, the meaning of "Sakai" is debt slaves, while those from Kelantan and Terengganu were called Pangan, the forest peoples. The Senoi and Proto-Malay arrived much later probably during the Neolithic period.

First pre-printed personalized stamps of Malaysia

Happy Aidilfitri or 'Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri' to all my Muslim readers. Above is the first pre-printed personalized stamps of Malaysia specially printed for Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2010. Its sold at RM19 per sheet but if you ask me, its rather pricey; taking into account the face value is only RM6. Anyway, I guess I cannot be the judge of this. It all depends on the philatelist; if this is part of what you collect, I guess it doesn't matter if its RM19 or RM90. We will still be willing to pay for it. Its just the parts and parcels of philately. HAHAHA.

With this sheet, I believe we can look forward to more issues for Christmas, Deepavali and Chinese New Year. Indirectly, POS Malaysia has introduced another area to collect. Interesting but I'm not too keen. My Birds of Prey is already keeping me on my toes...

First 'Intelligent' stamp by Royal Mail

The Royal Mail has launched the world's first "intelligent" stamp. Viewing the stamp via a smartphone takes users to a related webpage. Also required is the Junaio image recognition application - versions of which have been made for iPhone and Android smartphones. The Royal Mail said intelligent stamps "mark the next step in the evolution of our stamps, bringing them firmly into the 21st Century."

'New world'

Those viewing the stamp, part of the Royal Mail's latest Great British Railways edition, via the Junaio app will be directed to a short film showing Bernard Cribbins reading Auden's famous poem The Night Mail.

"WH Auden wrote the Night Mail poem in 1936 for the Post Office's own blockbuster film of the same name, which has for years remained in the hearts and minds of many," said Mr Cribbins.

The application is another example of augmented reality in which real world scenes or situations are annotated and enhanced by pairing them with web-based data. One AR app for smartphones lets owners use the camera on the gadget to effectively see through buildings to find the nearest tube station.

The Royal Mail's Philip Parker said: "This is the first time a national postal service has used this kind of technology on their stamps and we're very excited to be bringing intelligent stamps to the nation's post."

The technology will also be made available on selected future special stamps.

PSM Stamp Fair (18 - 19 September 2010)

PSM will be organizing another Stamp Fair on 18 & 19 September 2010 at MBPJ Library (Please refer to the map below). As usual we will have Clifford, Abdullah, Govin, and other dealers taking up tables. Hopefully, we will have more dealers this time around. I truly hope all my readers will support the event and really hope to meet you all there.

Agenda:

1. Dealers trading stamps.
2. Collectors fellowship and exchange of views on collecting experience
3. Advisory services by PSM on preparation of exhibits.

Sadly, I'm giving this fair a miss. I've pre-plan to go back to my hometown for holidays as its been quite a while since I last went home. Family comes first. Anyway, I'm sure everyone will have great fun during the fair. I'm sure we have much to learn from our senior members.

Its been 53 years since we got our independence on 31st August 1957. This year, Bukit Jalil Stadium was selected as the venue to celebrate and commemorate this glorious day. Malaysia is definitely very unique especially with a diverse culture. Speaking on that, I guess I'm a living example of a true Malaysian... LOL. I'm blessed to be a Chindian; my dad is Chinese while my mum is Indian. HAHAHA

With regards to philately, POS Malaysia has issued numerous philatelic materials. However, one of the area that has gained a lot of interest over the years are the 1957 Merdeka First Day Cover Collection. Talking on this, I guess on the most memorable event was in 2007 when a philatelic exhibition was held in Penang in conjuction with the 50th Merdeka Anniversary. The historic stamps and covers, some from private collections, was exhibited for a month on the first floor of the double-storey museum.

This particular collection is very interesting as it consists of both official covers and private covers. More importantly, it gives great pride to the collector for having something that is close to the heart of all Malaysia; a piece of history itself.

PS: I guess any collection can be great if you put your HEART to it. It does not always need a heavy investment to have a collection you can be proud of. Just enjoy the hobby and I'm sure with time, we will have a collection that stands out.

This time, I would like to showcase a beautiful cover I got from Australia in April 2010. I simply love the clear postmark. Though the cover is over-paid, its hard to resist covers like this. Its just a beauty.

A little info on the cover:

The stamp and cover depicts the Sydney Royal Easter Show. The 2010 Sydney Royal Easter Show took place at Sydney Showground from April 1 to 14. Held by the Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales each year at Easter time, the Sydney Royal Easter Show is more than a farm fair.

Certainly it has massive displays of Australian farm produce and the biggest and best of them, and they are very much a sight to behold. But, more than this, the Sydney Royal Easter Show is an annual extravaganza including some of the latest and most heart-stopping carnival rides, rodeo events, motorcycle and skateboarding stunts, livestock races, woodchopping competitions, diving (if not flying) pigs, a variety of parades, fashion shows, food stalls of various kinds, and a showcase of new and popular products.

Peculiar Stamps - You either LOVE them or HATE them

Non-philatelist tend to have the impression that philately can be boring. You should think again. Im sure the stamps below will definitely change your mind. When it comes to peculiar philately, 3 countries are rather dominant; Bhutan, Switzerland and Austria. Hence, in this post, I will only share peculiar stamps from these countries only. Please enjoy:

Moving images on their stamps is one of the latest hits in philately. Below is an example from Austria.

In 2006, Austria again issued this curious stamp, which could even be said to be out of this world. The stamp contains 0.03 grams of dust from a meteorite found in Morocco two years earlier, which was fixed to the stamp with a special adhesive:

Austria Post yet again produced another shocking surprise with the world’s first stamp made of football materials in 2008.

In 2005, Austria produced their own embroidered stamps depicting the alpine flower:

Switzerland on the other hand issued stamps in a foil-wrapped booklet, similar to most chocolate bars. Yummy but it still tastes like stamps. Don't be fooled. LOL

In 2000, Switzerland produced embroidered stamp, celebrating the master piece created in St. Gallen, one of the Swiss Canton:

In 2004, Switzerland issued this wooden stamp made from 120-year-old fir trees:

The small Himalayan nation of Bhutan is definitely the "LEADER" when it comes to peculiar stamps, including the first ever stamp made of steel:

Yet again in 1973, Bhutan produced stamps which has rose scented:

If rose scented stamps weren't enough, Bhutan took the philately world by storm with the introduction of stamps which are real phonograph records:

I guess as a philatelist, we either LOVE them or HATE them. As for me, I'm neutral. Its good to have them in my collection but Im not crazy of them. How about all of you?

Snapshot From the Star Newspaper

The Star Newspaper reported that Malaysia's oldest Hindu temple - the Sri Maha Mariamman temple has been given the honour of being the first ever to be portrayed on a postage stamp. The question is "HOW TRUE IS THE NEWS?"

Ive checked with POS Malaysia and they definitely didn't issue any stamps with regards to the temple. So, is this a BOGUS issue?

Nope but most probably its a personalized stamp. My concern is on how can a personalized stamp be considered the first ever to be portrayed on a postage stamp? This is certainly a big concern in the world of philately. Just imagine everyone starts printing personalized stamps and claims that it is the first in the world. That will be weird. LOL

Another mistake is that Sri Maha Mariamman temple has been depicted on the 50 sen stamp of Visit Malaysia Year issue (19th March 2007). In this case, whether or not its a personalized stamp, the facts are still wrong. LOL

Besides that, International Philatelic Bloggers has started to blog about the issue and one of them is my friend from Pakistan. We can't blame anyone as it was published in the newspaper.

Postal Automated Machine (PAM) Labels

My beloved wife, Pame buying PAM Labels

After such a long time, POS Malaysia finally released the new Pos Automated Machine (PAM) Labels on 3rd November 2009. Basically, there are five values from 30sen, 40sen, 50sen, RM1, and RM2. We can also select other values by selecting "Other Values" with 10sen being the minimum limit. This is definitely what Malaysians need as we dont really need to wait for long queues just to get stamps. Its also great news for local philatelist as PAM Labels finally provide us another area to study. Being around for the last 9 months or so, PAM has truly provided a number of varieties for users. As for me, Im not really focus on this area as there's no birds on the PAM labels or mayb u can argue that the POS Label has a bird after all.. Ooops, i got to rethink on this. LOL...

Thermal paper is being used, whereas laser beam is used to create the printing on the paper. In addition, PAM are self-adhesive hence provides great convenience. Some info on the 13 digits at the bottom of the denomination:

0012308100864

001:
Indicates the machine number (eg. 001, the machine 001 is located at GPO Kuala Lumpur)

230810:
Indicates the date (230810 = 23rd August 2010)

0864:
Indicates that the label is 864th print of that day

Besides the registered sticker, even the postmark used on the cover states "registered". This is rather unique as not many countries actually practice that. Normally, they either use a sticker or cancellation. Besides that, I really appreciate that you have used the correct postage rate. Just can't thank you enough, my dear friend.

This is another beautiful cover from Sweden to my old address. Yes, I went back home recently and took the covers back to Kuala Lumpur. Hence, my next few post will be covers sent to my parent's address. Thank you, Kjell for this beautiful cover. The beautiful ms was issued to commemorate the wedding of Sweden's Crown-princess. I really love the cover for the clear postmarks. My cover collection is mostly focus on Birds especially eagles or pigeons but covers with CLEAR Postmark are most welcomed.

Thanks to my dear friend, Xu Wei for these beautiful pictorial postmarks. Not really materials of my themes but Im really in love with pictorial cancellations from China. They are simply so beautiful that its a work of art by itself. Though I understand that not many are interested with pictorial postmarks as preference are given to normal postmarks, I on the other hand just can't resist pictorial postmarks especially on Eagles. Being a thematic collector, I personally understand how hard is it to get covers with pictorial postmarks relating to your theme. You should ask me about it... LOL

Hopefully, China will have Eagle postmarks in the future. Would definitely love to have that.

25th Asian Philatelic Exhibition - Bangkok 2010

Nope, I didn't manage to go though I had plans earlier. Have to amid that the chaos earlier in Thailand wasn't helping much but most of all its because of my work. Doubting that I will able to take any holidays until the project completes. I guess thats life.

Bird Cover From Iran

I received this beautiful bird cover last year thanks to my dear friend, Hamid. Definitely one of my favorite cover as it is not just a bird cover but more importantly a cover depicting the Ospreys (Bird of Preys). Love the postmark also though one of the postmark on the right isn't clear. I guess philatelist are humans also. Errors do happen. LOL

The pair of ospreys is actually a joint issue between Iran and Portugal. Hopefully, someone can send me a cover from Portugal. OMG, I know how greedy I can be but if anyone is able to help me, please mail me as I will prepare a good cover for you too.

Looking forward to receive more bird of prey or pigeon covers as they are my themes. However, as of now, I'm very much focus on materials with regards to Eagles. Hope of of u will help me grow my beloved collection.

Its a SAD SAD day for me as my beautiful covers from Nicaragua was vandalized. Come on, of all the things why vandalized my covers? Its so disappointing as i was eagerly waiting for these beautiful covers and this is what I got:

I know my dear friend, Dr Jean has done all he could to prepare these beautiful covers. I'm so disappointed and went to complain to the management but what I got from them, "Its only a Cover, don't worry too much". Thats really hurting. Pos Malaysia Berhad will be issuing a special collection of stamps and first-day covers with regards to Traditional Festive Food on 10th August 2010.

There will be 5 design each for the 80 sen denomination to continue the current trend of se-tenant stamps. Besides that, there will be yet another booklet. The interesting thing is that both the stamps from the sheetlets and booklet are a PERFECT MATCH. I'm sure many FDC collector will be creating FDCs as shown in the poster. Ooops, this means the booklet will definitely be gone in no time. LOL

In addition, there will be another odd shape ms. Seems to be another trend with PoS Malaysia. Im sure that it will be a HOT item also.

This is a very beautiful cover from France. Though this cover is actually very far from my theme, I cant resist to love it as its one of the first covers I got with my new address. Besides that, its registered and it actually ended up at the wrong destination. Please take note that the cover has a signature from the Supervisor in Jinjang Post Office. In addition, I really love the clear postmark; definitely essential to a cover collector.

Myanmar Philately - A New Approach

This is my first postcard from Myanmar and to my surprise its actually an invitation to a philatelic workshop in Myanmar. Sadly, I'm just too busy with my work and couldn't spare time to go there. Im sure I would have love to meet my Myanmar philatelic friends especially Thitar. However, my dearest friend Vera and Bob went to Myanmar and they definitely had the time of their life. Vera was there to give a workshop on thematic collection . In addition, there was an exhibit entitled Myanmar Philately - A New Approach which truly is a WOW factor.

Me and my wife decided to join the FUN at GPO Kuala Lumpur today as the new Brave Warrior stamps were issued. Besides that, POS Malaysia was having a clearance sales. The crowd was definite good today but didnt really agree on how POS Malaysia conducted the sales for the FDCs. We would have preffered them to have a booth rather than having people queuing; waiting for their turns. Definitely seem a little unfair. LOL...

There will be 1 design each for the 60 sen denomination, 70 sen denomination and 80 sen denomination. Besides that, the cover will be sold at 30 sen each. I'm sure MC collectors will have plenty of option for this issue. The postmark is a good hint. LOL...

However, I definitely love to receive all this personalized covers as they give me a lasting impression of the sender. LOL...

Birdpex is a dream for all bird stamp collectors. Sadly, Ive not been to one and again Ive missed the chance of attending this year's Birdpex in Belgium. My dear friend, Holger has invited me to come over but Im really sorry I couldnt make it. Hope to be there for the next one.

However, to my suprise, I got some lovely gifts from Antwerp. Please enjoy this lovely souvenirs from Birdpex 2010. They are so lovely; its to die for...

A Little Info:

BIRDPEX 6 is the sixth bird-only stamp show. It is an international stamp exhibition “birds” that is held every four years. After Christchurch(New Zealand, 1990), Rosenheim (Germany, 1994), London (England, 1998), Leek (the Netherlands, 2002) and Nørresundby (Denmark, 2006) while this year it was held in Antwerp (Belgium, 2010).

This exhibition is open for every bird stamp exhibitor, beginner or advanced collector. Not only exhibits of thematic philately are invited, but also maximaphily, postal history, traditional philately, open class and one frame.

Together with BIRDPEX also the international FEPA and national stamp exhibition ANTVERPIA 2010 took place from 9th to 12th of April 2010 in Antwerp Expo.
